Identity Crisis

Backstory

For those who don’t know yet, Identity Crisis is the first major storyline that I’m running with Patrick McCarthy in the newly reopened SCCW. The premise for the storyline centers around how McCarthy entered the two previous incarnations of SCCW: as part of a tag team. McCarthy first “big break” in the business was when Jay Jerzey’s partner was injured while holding the Tag Team titles. Jerzey, instead of dropping the belts, elected to select a relative unknown and green-as-goose-shit rookie as his tag partner. Thus, Patrick McCarthy became part of Youthanazia (which Cory continuously misspells). When McCarthy returned to the Canadian indy circuit it was in a SCCW splinter-fed: Pure Honor Wrestling (PHW). Pure Honor Wrestling was later merged with Central Ontario Pro Wrestling (COPW) which would become SCCW. The tag belts had to be unified, so as one-half of the PHW Tag Team champions Patrick McCarthy came back to SCCW as part of S & M with Scarlett Willis.

With SCCW returning, it only makes sense that the only man to ever hold the SCCW, PHW and COPW tag team titles should return as part of a tag team… But which one? With Jay Jerzey and Scarlett Willis both returning, McCarthy is left at a crossroads. On the one hand, the last tag team he was a part of was S & M, and they were undefeated and unmatched in their time in COPW/SCCW. On the other hand, McCarthy and Scarlett haven’t spoken in three years since they broke off their engagement and she moved back how to Utah, leaving him in Canada.

That’s what you need to know in terms of backstory.

Recently

During the promos leading up to the first Monday Night Aggression, Jay Jerzey hinted not only having been in contact with Patrick McCarthy, as the two are supposedly close friends in the business/sport, but also that Youthanazia would be returning to SCCW. Conversely, Scarlett Willis talked about her misgivings about being teamed with Patrick again and the deep-seat emotions that such a pairing might bring out of her. For his on part, McCarthy physically became ill from feelings of guilt, remorse and heartbreak upon seeing Scarlett’s first promo and hearing her refer to him as “he who shall remain nameless” (missing the part about how talking about him would cause her emotional stress).

At the first MNA, McCarthy and Scarlett had an awkward encounter in the backstage area. Trying to find the words to reconcile the time they spent apart. This was interrupted by Jay Jerzey making his best effort to “save” McCarthy from an obviously awkward situation and then trying to coax McCarthy into reforming Youthanazia. While McCarthy remained aloof in the face of Jerzey’s persistence, he did agree to a one-off tag match for the second MNA. Meanwhile, the newly reformed S & M team picked up their first win over Kirsta Lewis and Rayne Young in the main event.

During the match, McCarthy became visibly irate at the physical abuse ditched out on Scarlett. As a character known for his calm and collected manner, this was a far departure for him. Later on when the “hot tag” to McCarthy was reversed by the official, McCarthy shoved the referee and attacked his opponents, almost earning a DQ. When Rayne Young demanded that Scarlett get back in the ring – as she was still the legal wrestler according to the referee – McCarthy stood between Young and Scarlett and refused to give up his ground until Scarlett was able to re-enter under her own power. This showing of protectiveness and ire were meant to demonstrate that McCarthy obviously still have feelings for Scarlett that go beyond that of a tag team partner. It is also worth noting that in the match, McCarthy and Scarlett displayed good chemistry, working in tandem, as if they hadn’t spent 3 years apart.

I actually enjoyed writing the Main Event, because I feel not enough story-telling is done DURING the matches. That is the whole point of wrestling afterall: storytelling via wrestling.

Moving Forward

I don’t want to give too much away about what’s happening moving forward, but McCarthy has small angles and segments lined up with the “mysterious” new owner, as well as something involving the Bunkhouse Brawl to determine the first SCCW Heavyweight champion, the Legacy title, and the All Barrie Tag Titles. The tag line for whole Identity Crisis storyline is based on the Spiderman “Identity Crisis” series where Spiderman became a wanted criminal so Peter Parker adopted several new identities such as Prodigy and Dusk. The comics would have titles like “If Spiderman is Dusk, the who is Prodigy?” which is where I got “If Patrick McCarthy is in S & M, then who is in Youthanazia?” The same basic premise is that a man can’t serve two masters, or be in two places at the same time. Eventually everything will come to a head.

Down the line, but not too far down, a big feud (actually two) is scheduled to evolve out of this storyline.

Stay tuned here for little news and notes on my RPs and maybe some in-character stuff coming soon!

Returning Home

A few weeks ago I decided I’d had enough of running my own promotion, the now defunct Saints Haven. I handed over control of the Haven to Cam and Luke, and despite their abilities I really didn’t expect it to last. Not more than a day or two after I give up control, I get an instant message from Cory. I hadn’t spoken to Cory in about a month and a half. He asked me what I was up to and I told him that I just given up control of Saints Haven and was looking to explore my options as a handler again.

Sometimes I feel like the Brett Favre of e-Wrestling, retiring some many times only to come back when retirement doesn’t suit my athletic (err, creative) impulses. Unlike the former Green Bay great, however, I can still compete at the highest level of competition any where in eWrestling; a claim I’ve made for about 4-5 years now and am still willing to back-up almost anywhere, anytime and under any circumstances.

Anyways, Cory asked me how I would feel about SCCW coming back, and I essentially laughed it off. Unlike me, Cory had retired in 2006 and managed to stay retired. He went on to do a number of fantasy booking things, but that’s not the same as e-Wrestling (and for me, it was nowhere near as fun or challenging or competitive). When he told me he was seriously considering it my reaction was somewhere between “Fuck yeah” and “ZOMFG”.

My original plan was to create a brand-new character for SCCW. The concept behind the character to be was essentially me – Vinny – if I were breaking into the wrestling world myself. In addition to RPing, I had also planned on incorporating a blog, a Twitter account, and other social media into the character. I also had kicked around the idea of a low-budget, documentary style film crew following the character around for a piece about the lives of independent professional wrestlers. Cory liked the idea, but said “So you’re not going to be bring back McCarthy?” I told him that if he could get Scarlett to re-join, then I wouldn’t have any choice but to bring him back.

The next day we look at the old forum and guess who posted? Needless to say, I was good to my word and brought back Patrick “The Saint” McCarthy. It feels great to back roleplaying as Paddy Mac again, and it feels even better to be surrounded by old friends from SCCW like Kirsta Lewis, Jay Jerzey, Myke Adams, Riflewilly, and so on. There’s also some SCCW newbies like Orange Crush and Creed that give a little new blood balance to the roster. Unquestionably, in my mind, this is the highest quality collection of roleplayers anywhere in the eWrestling world today.

The only problem is that I’m not sure I fit in.

When I was last in SCCW/COPW we had pretty complex rating system. RPs were scored on a scale of 0-100 with points for Grammar, Originality, Character Development, Description and Match Discussion. All five areas were weighted evenly at 20 points apiece. Back under this old model I was successful doing the sort of roleplays that became my style: mid-to-long in length with a descriptive setting, some advancement of the character outside of the ring and generally ending with a diatribe about my next match. It was a style that has suited me well, and evolved slightly with me over time. I took this style to UCW, which had a similar way of viewing RPs.

When Cory resurrected SCCW, he changed the grading criteria:

30 points will be match hype. Think about it folks.. we are here for our love of the game. You WANT people to watch (read) your match. So you need to make people believe the match is important to you. Remember the hype the announcers do? You need to do it too. I am sorry but a 20 page roleplay about how your dinner went with your mom may have some important relevance to your wrestler, but it will not sell tickets to your match. So while you do not have to talk JUST about your match, make sure it is an important part of your roleplay.

20 points will be for spelling and grammar. I should not have to elaborate on this.

This of course makes perfect sense, but I feel it leaves out key aspects, not just of writing, but for the game of eWrestling as well. If we’re going back to a heavy focus on match discussion – and in this case, outside of spelling, it is the only focus – then what’s the difference if we go back to the simple in-ring promos that eWrestling essentially started out as? There’s no reward under this system for a vignette that takes place in a unique, well-described setting. Nor is there any reward for adding depth to your character. I think the argument about not wanting to read about “how your dinner went with your mom” is not only lazy, but irrelevant.

I have never, ever said that wrestling shouldn’t be the focus of an RP (well, that’s not true but I did say it was under extreme circumstances), but what people who dogmatically follow this rule forget is that the WRESTLERS are the focus of the wrestling. While their dinner with mom may be completely irrelevant to a match, their mindset certainly isn’t. The vast majority of RPs that I read nowadays don’t focus on the monotony of a character’s everyday life, but rather focus on the workings of his/her mind and his/her relationship with fellow wrestlers.

For example, intricate detail about the airport where the wrestler arrived is unnecessary, but knowing that the wrestler just flew back in from burying his/her mother, or that the wrestler has a fear of flying, or that the wrestler is arriving late without proper time to prepare for a match is COMPLETELY relevant. Not only thought, most of these aspects are accomplished better (as are most things in writing) through SHOWING and not telling. While dialog and match discussion are great, it is better to SHOW the reader these things than it is to simply tell it to them. Furthermore, I believe each one of these instance also hypes the match, and does so in a more subtle and effective way than any trash-talk ever could.

If Wrestler X is arriving late to show, he doesn’t have a place to stay and no time to train, and so forth… won’t that make his match with Wrestler Y more compelling since now X is at a disadvantage? Is your curiousity piqued as to WHY he was late? And should Y defeat X, does that necessarily mean that Y is the better wrestler? Would X have won is he was at 100%?

My point – my selfish point, at that – is that this new, simpler system does not factor in the nuances that made these SCCW originals so talented in their writing. Everyone brought a different style to roleplay to the table, and they were all judged equally and on their quality/entertainment value. Chris Champion can trash talk any one else on the SCCW roster under the table without even the slightest bit of question. Should he win every match based solely on that (which in my estimation, he would)? I don’t believe so.

So, yeah, this was supposed to be about how excited I was to be back, but I guess I got TOO excited and it turned into a rant.

- V

EDIT. Talked to Cory about this. He’s agreed to modify the judging based on the issue I raised to include weight toward storyline building and hype. 15% Story, 20% Hype, 15% Grammar. I think that’s a really good system.

Now What?

What’s The Next Step For Patrick McCarthy?

So if you’ve been watching Channel UCW you’ve seen that the old Paddy Mac/Damion Darkside feud is shaping up nicely. I’m fairly proud of how this angle is moving along. It’s not earth-shattering or anything like that but it is a very solid angle, a very solid feud and it begs for attention and time on UCW shows, and will get a high-billing on the UCW PPV. An argument could even be theoretically made that it deserves a higher billing than the World Title Match, but its e-Wrestling and its not about how many Main Events you’re in or PPVs you headline.

Luke has taken the Darkside character down some great and pervertedly creepy avenues that I am really proud that he’s been able to accomplish. He also came up with a great idea for last Monday’s Mind Games, which of course involved me losing yet again. If you missed it, McCarthy got drugged, dragged out to the ring and forced to watch Darkside assault Loveless and then Aaron Blaize came down and took advantage of McCarthy being incapacitated.

I took another angled loss because as much as my foolish pride wanted me to devastate Blaize for claiming he beat me (the arrogance!) I decided that it would better benefit UCW to elevate a kid that’s been working hard. Plus I don’t lose too much from this loss, besides in the meaningless record, it doesn’t harm the prestige of the Intercontinental title and it elevates the TV champion and his belt. Plus Blaize is a good kid and deserved a high profile win. He’s a smart kid and even ironically tipped the cap in his RP when he said that I “unwillingly elevated him”. In the words of Kenny Banyah: “Gold, Jerry. Gold!”

My problem now is when I defeat Damon Darkside – cocky, much? Yes, I am. Because 1. its angled and 2. I always beat Luke ;-) – and i regain Lindsay… then what for the Mac Daddy? The initial plan was to do a heel turn… but now I’m not so sure.

As of right now Doctor Ian is a heel. Damion Darkside is a heel. Damien Kahn is a heel. Samuel Hessingstock is a heel. Aaron Blaize is a heel. Greg Venom is the only one of the top 5 guys in UCW that is even close to a face, and in my eyes he’s bordering on tweener still at this point, but he gained a lot of sympathy with the Damien Kahn feud that is still on going.

Now THAT is an epic feud. I mentioned that while my feud with Luke is good, this is a must read feud and it didn’t help having to go against that at Revolution. Definitely a show-stealer. Props to Greggo and Paul for some great work, with Paul really pushing the envelope with his rape angles. Truly creepy stuff, and it played right into my hands because Damion Darkside has the reputation as the craziest guy in UCW so I got to play the old “well if you think that’s bad imagine what DD is doing!” card.

Back on topic, I’m not sure where to go with Patrick McCarthy right now. To be perfectly honest: UCW needs good-guys, and with Ant expressing interest in establishing the same style of stable that I had hoped to start, that sort of leaves me completely out in the cold. The only option I really have is to remain the top face in the company until someone else steps up huge or one of the top stars turns.

So that’s where things stand with Paddy Mac.

Mistaken Identity – I think I’ve gone crazy

Mistaken Identity – Chapter 24

I think this RP is proof that I’ve gone off the deep end once and for all. I just finished reading Chuck Palahniuk’s masterpiece Fight Club. I also just rewatched David Finscher’s brilliant film adaptation of the novel. I also reread J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher In The Rye, arguably the greatest novel ever written. Reading these master-works and then sitting down to write has made me feel wholly inadequete as an artist.

But it also planted the seeds for the heel turn that I talked about in my last blog post. The concept of sub-culture, destroyed youth, disposable culture and disenfranchisement are going to factor heavily into the new persona of Patrick McCarthy.

In my personal life, I’ve had a rough week for no real reason. I’ve had a lot of fits of paranoia, uncontrollable rage, frustration, and all kinds of pent of energy: violent, nervous, sexual, et cetera. It got me thinking not only about my own disenfranchisement but also about the tricks my mind plays on me and how that was the original impetus for the creation of Patrick McCarthy.

This caused me to create a new character in the life of Patrick McCarthy, as well as to resurrect one from his past. The new character is The Man With No Name named after the famous Clint Eastwood character from Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy (Fistful of Dollars, The Good The Bad And The Ugly, Pale Rider). I haven’t completely decided what exactly I want to do with this character. I can’t decided whether I want him to be a tangible entity or just an elaborate figment of McCarthy’s imagination. I attempted this once before and bailed out on it, largely because I wasn’t a good enough writer to pull it off. My current thought is that The Man WIth No Name is Patrick McCarthy’s personal Tyler Durden. McCarthy has been talking more and more recently about his disenfranchisement with the world around him. The Man With No Name might end up being the catalyst to his heel turn.

The other character is Scarlett Willis. The end of the RP talks about Scarlett Willis sitting in a support group for single mothers in a church basement (ironically the church is Our Lady of Perpetual Hope). I haven’t decided how to rectify the fact that The Man With No Name knows this about Scarlett without doing something that completely rips off Fight Club. If you have any thoughts, feel free to leave them in the comments.

I don’t want to give anything away, but Scarlett Willis, as I have it planned now, plays a HUGE part in the future of Patrick McCarthy, so long as the original handler gives me her blessing to use the Sugar-Powered Princess.

I’ve lost my train of thought, but I really am in love with this new RP. Let me know what you think in the comments, or if you have any questions, leave those too and I’ll update the post to answer any questions.

Peace,

- Vinny

Why Heels Ultimately Fail

Everyone knows that e-wrestling (and real wrestling for that matter) breaks down to the simple formula of good vs. evil; face vs. heel. Now people are going to bitch at me and say “what about tweeners?” Tweeners don’t work in e-Wrestling for the same reason they don’t work in real life: lack of talent. In e-W most people who work as “tweeners” are still caught in the Attitude era and their work sucks. That, or they’re trying to hard to knock off Raven (who was a HEEL and a damn good one at that).

So let’s be honest: you’re either a good guy or a bad guy. The more you try to create a gray area, the more you risk screwing up your storyline, confusing your audience and just all around fucking your shit up. But it is because of this blind, stupid, Attitude era mindset that e-Wrestling heels ultimately fail.

The problem that most handlers have is that they want their character to be a bad guy, but not just a bad guy: a cool bad guy. The problem with that is cool gets over. Just look at CM Punk. CM Punk was a phenomenal heel, probably the best currently in wrestling in my opinion. The problem is: he’s too cool to stay heel in anything but a lame, mark-tastic WWE market (not that TNA is much better, but there are enough “heel section” smarks).  And if they’re not trying to be cool, they’re one of three things: evil, arrogant, or boring.

If you’re boring: you fail. Epic, epic fail. End of discussion (just ask Lance Storm).

If you’re evil, you’re eventually going to fail, and fail in a very unfashionable, slow, soul-suckingly boring fashion. If your evil guys wears any kind of make-up all it takes is one well-worded “emo” or “goth” insult from a wise-mouth face to absolutely bury your character. Because honestly, there’s no recovery for that. Even if you get rid of the make-up, smart faces will pick on that and they’ll still get you for that. Not too mention the fact that most people take “evil” way too far. Everyone tries to “out-evil” everyone else. It is the lamest, stupidest part of e-W. One guy hits a chick, the next guy rapes a chick, the next guy hits a child, the next guy rapes a child, the next guy kills someone, the next guy kills two people, the next guy kills a family…

…WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE POLICE, MAN? On the e-W timeline, evil characters have very short lifespans because of the escalation of evil and the inability to counteract even through the very best of writing.

Arrogant is a cross between the two previous examples. Either you’re not clever enough, and you just become a lame-ass doofus with a Randy Orton pic base, or you’re actually a clever bastard… but you’re too clever and you start getting funny… guess who just became cool. Guess who just became a face.

The problem is that most handlers refuse to accept this, or worse: don’t realize it. This is when e-W stops being fun. You can’t explain why its not fun anymore, or why all of a sudden you’ve got writer’s block, but there it is. You subconsciously realize that there’s no point to what you’re doing anymore, because your RPs have become essentially indistinguishable from your (face) opponents’. Now its no longer a contest of who is roleplaying as their character, but rather who has the more clever barbs, the more clever background story, or (sadly) who crossed their T’s and dotted their lower-case J’s correctly.

———-

So how does one achieve longevity as a heel? Honestly… I don’t know. But I do have a theory. It’s a theory I’ve established from watching a lot of heel work on the independent promotions and from looking at a lot of e-W characters.

The problem that heels develop is that they gain a following of fans. Instead of embracing this small contingent of fans, the heel tries to either ignore these fans or try to alienate them. My favorite example of the latter is CM Punk: “What the hell are you cheering for? I’m insulting you! ‘Yay! We suck!’ What’s wrong with you morons?” That’s a great line, and its funny. The problem is… that’s a great line, and it’s funny. Remember what happens when you’re funny? Yep. Punk got cheered even more, and he got laughs. Laughs are the kiss of death for a heel. The bad guy isn’t supposed to “entertain” the audience (obviously as a performer he’s supposed to entertain them, but he’s supposed to entertain them by being the antagonist), so when a heel gets the crowd laughing, he’s fucking over himself and he’s fucking over the babyface. Especially if the babyface tries to one-up him… and fails.

So how can a heel save himself from being too popular? I call this the Sox/Yankees paradox. Being a hardcore Boston Red Sox fan, it is my sworn duty to hate all things Yankees (and by extension, all things New York related). Now when examining it, it doesn’t make any sense to hate an abstract concept. What makes it worth hating are the Yankees FANS. The rivalry isn’t just between the Sox and the Yanks but between their fans as well. The Age of the Fall in Ring of Honor are a phenomenal example of this being dragged over into wrestling. AOTF didn’t go out there and try to piss EVERYONE off. They went out their and tried to recruit people to their “side.” Then they attacked the biggest babyfaces in the company. AOTF has very distinct fans: they dress all in black and wear a covering over their faces. By creating tension between AOTF and The Briscoe Bros. they created tension between AOTF and Briscoe fans.

This made all the Ring of Honor fans hate AOTF so much more. Because if heels win, usually no ones happy, and no one rubs your nose in it. But if those heels have fans behind them, shit you want them to lose so you don’t have to hear how much better they are from their damn fans. AOTF is now hated so much that when they won the tag belts recently, people actually threw garbage into the ring.

Imagine that, the smark-iest fans in professional wrestling, so invested in AOTF losing that they are actually angry enough to hurl garbage at them (it’d be different if AOTF actually sucked in the ring, but trust me; they’re awesome).

So to me, that’s the secret to being a good heel: actually embracing a small (emphasis on SMALL) section of fans who support you and getting everyone else to hate them and you at the same time. So essentially, in order to be a heel… you actually need to be a tweener to a small extent. Weird, right?

That’s what I’m planning for Paddy Mac’s heel turn, anyways.

Peace,

- V

The McCarthy/Darkside Feud

Damion Darkside v. Patrick McCarthy

My buddy Luke is the handler of the character currently known as “Damion Vorhees” and formally known as “Damion Darkside.” The Damion Darkside character was your archetypical creepy, evil heel character. He wore a mask, threatened death and murder, stalked people, kidnapped people, talked to himself… the whole nine yards. In a nutshell he was evil, which made him the perfect antagonist for Patrick McCarthy. If you’re not familiar with Paddy Mac, here’s all you need to know:

  • Small, underdog type character
  • Devoutly religious (Catholic)
  • Parents murdered in front of him causing seemingly irreparable psychological damage such as night terrors, PTSD, and manic-depressive schizophrenia (which occasionally results in what Mac thinks are visions from God)
  • Despite being fucked in the head, Paddy Mac is the consummate good guy, formally very shy and quiet

The Darkside/McCarthy feud is your basic good v. evil feud, but Luke and I have been handling in feds together that the feud has now spanned somewhere between 3 and 5 promotions (I’ve lost count). When Luke brought Damion into UCW after me, it was his first run as Damion Vorhees who is a face incarnation of Damion Darkside (think Terry Funk; he’s so respected in the business that he’s cheered despite being a heel his whole career).

Luke’s been trying hard to reinvent the Damion character, even going so far as to give him a (fucking stupid) straight-edge gimmick. His hard work has been paying off though, because Damion Vorhees just got his first World title shot over in UCW in a match against the original doctor of Thugonomics: Doctor Ian. The good Doc managed to defeat Damion, and as part of the match stipulations, Damion now has to start wearing the mask again for a certain period of time.

While all this has been going on, Luke’s been asking me to respark the old McCarthy/Darkside rivalry. I’ve been putting it off for a number of reasons, but most basically because it’s hard to pull off a Face v. Face feud, and neither of us has anything to gain from a Face v. Face feud (which is technically a ‘rivalry’) at this point. So the loss to Doctor Ian and the mask stipulation (which, if you didn’t pick up on it, is a truly inventive way to put a new twist on the old ‘Loser Has To Un-Mask’ match).

Back when Damion Vorhees was Damion Darkside, he was crazy. When he unmasked and became Damion Vorhees he was a face. So the most logical thing (in wrestling’s crazy logic anyway) is that the mask is what made him evil. So the second Damion puts the mask back on, he reverts back to bad old Damion Darkside. This is the start to the McCarthy/Darkside new feud.

McCarthy is booked in a title v. title/champion v. champion match against Doctor Ian, the man who defeated Damion Vorhees at the last Pay-Per-View. Toward the end of the match, Damion comes down to the ring with a chair (knowing him, probably wrapped in barbed wire). Everyone thinks “Oh, he’s coming to get revenge on Doctor Ian for making him wear the mask.’ Wrong. Here comes the swerve: Damion hits McCarthy with the chair. Here’s where Luke and I differ on a minor point, I think he should just leave after that. Luke thinks he should unmask and check if McCarthy’s okay. The difference is a matter of subtlety. If he unmasks everyone’s going to go ‘Oh the mask makes him evil’ which is fine, but if he just leaves everyone goes “What the fuck was that for?”

Now I want it that way because then Damion can cut promos like “What did I do?” and have interaction with his girl about what he did, maybe go so far as to apologize to McCarthy backstage in a segment. Darkside will again interfer after McCarthy’s match the next week. Which will prompt the fans to start hating him, and will cause Damion to question what’s happening to him.

The next week, Damion will try to apologize again and McCarthy will blow him off and tell him to stay away. Another segment could show Damion walking down the hallways or out near the fans and having people try to stay far away from him. The reason for this is to create an air of anger and disenfranchisement around Damion, the good Damion. Because THEN Damion will turn to the mask out of weakness, not because he’s obliged to. That’s when the mask REALLY takes over.

From here Damion can cut promos where he’s wearing the mask when he doesn’t have to, sort of like a Doctor Jeckyll/Mr. Hyde thing. He can alienate his girlfriend, or abuse her or whatever. He can also break his Straight-Edge lifestyle and various other nefarious things. But he will have to start stalking McCarthy again. Think if someone with actual talent wrote Anakin Skywalker’s seduction by the darkside (pun intended). Disenfranchisement leads to evil.

McCarthy, meanwhile, is busy trying to adjust to having this new valet, Lindsay Loveless, in his life. Basically the angle is meant to be cute/comical to start. The last person in the world who should have a valet is Patrick McCarthy and that is going to become evident. The UCW office will also play a large part in creating comedic situations for Paddy Mac and Double L. One idea I’ve got so far is that the office wants to make them a kayfabe (in character) couple, and because of this they have to spend time outside the ring together and stay in the say hotel room. This will be done in the promo “Roommates” that I’ve got kicking around in the old noggin.

The Mac Daddy is also going to teach the lovely Lindsay about wrestling, et cetera, et cetera. But because Pat enters through the crowd, they will have seperate entrances. During his entrance, he will motion towards the main rampway and Lindsay will appear carrying his belts and proceed to walk to the ring. This is where Damion comes in.

Before a match, probably a title defense, McCarthy will motion to the entrance ramp and LL won’t appear. McCarthy will finish his entrance and motion again. Still no Lindsay. That’s when DD appears on the big screen with a kidnapped Lindsay. McCarthy leaves the matches before it starts. He is forced to forfeit the match, but because it never officially started: he retains his belt on a technicality.

Now throughout the whole build-up there are going to be a lot of subtle and not so subtle references to McCarthy’s first love interest: Scarlett. When DD kidnaps her, he’s going to refer to her as Scarlett. McCarthy will cut a promo on something DD did in the past – carved Scarlett’s name into a baseball bat and pretended it was her (think a creepier version of Al Snow with Head or Perry Saturn with Moppy) – and McCarthy will cut a promo to the effect of “this isn’t a baseball bat! This isn’t fun and games anymore!”

On Damion’s side, he’ll be cutting promos referring to LL as Scarlett and doing creepy shit like putting lipstick on her and saying “Scarlett loves this shade” or creating a “romantic” dinner with LL tied up and gagged (but wearing new clothes so its insinuated that DD undressed her and then redressed her). Eventually he’ll think he’s brainwashed LL into thinking she’s Scarlett, but she’s only saying she’s Scarlett to avoid further abuse. This is great MEGA-heel stuff. DD can even through in lines like “you never wanted her in the first place” to get at McCarthy’s guilt.

Eventually DD will bring LL back to UCW, for a dark wedding perhaps, maybe hiring the Syndicate to guard the ring. This isn’t a rip-off of what Taker did with Stephanie McMahon, its an homage… and its done better. McCarthy, of course, saves the day and follows this simple equation:

Big Save + Big Hug + Long Pause + Big First Kiss = RATING$.

This, of course, won’t be the blow-off. Damion had Scarlett, which he always wanted, and now McCarthy has “stolen” her from him. That’s about as far as I’ve gotten with this feud. The blow-off match can be something like a Winner Takes All where McCarthy has to put his IC Title, EWZine Title and LL on the line against Damion. Like I said, haven’t gotten that far yet but it’s a thought.

I’m super-excited about this storyline because its the first storyline that will be built around UCW’s new bi-monthly pay-per-view schedule. Every other storyline and feud we’ve run in UCW to this point has been built on one month at a time scheduling. This is first slow-build storyline in UCW (with the exception of some stuff proposed for the Syndicate). And I’m really pumped to be working with Luke again because we’re great at bouncing ideas around, and I know DD almost as well as I know Paddy Mac and vice versa for him.

Leave some comments. Let me know what you think.

Peace,

- V

What’s up, everyone out there in blog-land. My name’s Vinny, and I handle Patrick ‘The Saint’ McCarthy. My purpose in starting this blog is to have an outlet for my thoughts on my character, the directions I want to take him/am currently taking him, as well as a place to talk about angles, storylines, my buddies in the game, and whatever the hell else I feel like talking about. And considering I ended that last sentence with a preposition and started this one with a conjunction, I’d say we’re off to a wicked good start.

I guess I’ll start with a little about myself. If you couldn’t tell by my use of the word “wicked,” I’m a native Bostonian. And if you couldn’t tell by my self-deprecating grammar corrections, I’m a stickler for dotted i’s and crossed t’s. I’ve been into e-Wrestling in one form or another since late 1995. I know this because that’s when we got our first computer at my house that had an internet connection (AOL, of course, with that wonderful start-up noise). A friend of mine introduced me to an AOL e-mail e-fed, basically just the electronic version of the old ’80’s play-by-mail games they used to have (though at 21, I’m too young to remember them personally). I got hooked, and the rest – as they say – is history.

I recently graduated college with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in the field of Computer Science (adjusts my geek-glasses) and am currently training to become a bartender as a fall-back career/part-time supplement to the IT consulting job I’m starting in September. I’m into music, movies, snowboarding, and I’m a die-hard Boston/New England sports fan. I was at Game One of the 2004 World Series, Game Six of the 2007 ALCS (the famous $14 Grand Slam), and Game One of the 2007 World Series. The Red Sox won all three of those games, which means a lot in a jinx-crazy town like Boston.

I’m addicted to YouTube and Wikipedia. I use them to look up obscure crap late at night, because I keep very absurd hours (3pm-6am, usually) during the summer. I love watching old-school ECW clips on the ‘Tube, so if you’ve got a good link or six, pass them along and I’ll do my best to return the favor.

That’s about it for me. Expect another post in the very near future concerning the latest angle/storyline that I’m working on for Paddy Mac. Until then:

Peace out, Girl Scouts.
